quip water flosser
A new product architecture in the water flossing space focused on addressing key pain points with handheld devices, delivering new user centric features and creating a striking appearance consumers were proud to leave on the counter.
Led the design process for 1.5 years from concept to mass production
Led design and development for packaging across DTC and retail channels
Led user research session and stakeholder brainstorm sessions
Created final renderings for retail packaging and e-commerce
Sold across all Target and Walmart stores & DTC
Designed to be left out
The quip water flosser introduced new materials and a refined form to the category to create an appearance that users felt proud to display in their bathroom. This serves a secondary purpose of acting as a visual reminder to use the product every time they enter the bathroom.
A new level of control
I used a two-stage switch from digital cameras to improve the devices control. The first stage provides momentary use, while pressing the button fully allows continuous flow. This change greatly reduced mess, addressing a key issue found in our research.
Clear communication
Leveraging an RGB led we created a color code system to display modes to reduce visual clutter on the front of device.
Efficiency of form
By shifting the components to one side and completing the form with the reservoir it allowed the water capacity to greatly increase and the fill opening to be much larger than it’s counterparts in the category.
Simplified charging
A magnetic cable and guiding surfaces lock the cable in place and guide it neatly on the countertop. I leveraged quip’s existing charging cable we had designed for the brush to reduce operational complexity and increase order quantity.
It starts with people
Foundational knowledge was key for this project, we ran interviews with water flosser users around the country to better understand their experiences and pain points with the product.
Testing early & adapting
I worked with engineering to build functional alpha models to send out to water flosser users, the feedback from these tests provided key feedback to evolve the designs form and interactions.
Finding the home
We sent out our first off tool units to a new batch of users to see where the product would live in their home.
Improving charging
This stage of testing revealed that the cable length and durometer needed to be adjusted.
Comfort at all points
With controls in final shape we were able to test comfort, placement and force required to press.
