quip refillable mouthwash
A permanent refillable platform in the single use mouthwash category designed around dispensing a concentrated formula to save space.
Led the rapid design process for one year from concept to mass production
Collaborated with formulation chemists and flavor labs to develop the consumable
Led design and development for packaging for the refill bottle and retails packaging
Led user research sessions and stakeholder brainstorms
Sold at Target and Walmart & Direct to consumer
Small stature big clean
The concentrated formula makes the device much smaller than typical mouthwash packaging while providing the same number of uses. This lets the dispenser fit in different spots in the bathroom.
Keep it fresh
Our research showed that the cleanliness of the dispenser is very important, especially in the bathroom. The dose cup is designed to stay inside the dispenser, which prevents buildup and protects its surfaces. Hidden supports lift the cup to allow for good airflow.
Controlled dosage
During testing, we discovered people prefer not to manually measure mouthwash concentrate, so we created a custom pump to deliver the right amount every time.
Guiding form
Subtle cues in the minimal form guide the user to pour the concentrate properly and the action is made easier by sculpted inner surfaces that guide the liquid concentrate.
Rapid exploration
Working on a rapid timeline I generated concepts between 2D and 3D sketching/prototyping to explore various ways mouthwash could be concentrated, stored and dispensed.
Focused directions
The concepts were refined into architectures each exploring a uniquely different dosing and refill experience. I structured these concepts into a step/stretch/leap spectrum of complexity.
Understanding user needs
I tested these concepts with individuals within our target demographics focusing on what aspects of the architectures were resonating with them. In these interviews I ran card sorting activities to help inform what aspects of the formulation were important to people.
Evolving the form
During the development process, I utilize 3D printing or actively collaborate with trusted partners to create high-quality models using representative materials that closely resemble the final product.
